Kaikaranga and Whaikōrero Classes.

Mangatawa Marae has become a hub for cultural learning, thanks to the dedication of Luke Pakeho and Titihuia, a husband-and-wife duo passionate about Te Reo Māori and marae protocols. Their Kaikaranga and Whaikōrero classes, held fortnightly on Wednesdays, offer an invaluable opportunity for tauira (students) to connect with their heritage and gain confidence in speaking on the paepae.

For Luke and Titihuia, the journey into Te Reo Māori was not an early calling. It wasn’t until their 40s that they both felt a deep desire to learn the language. Enrolling in Te Ara Reo at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, and later Te Ataarangi at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, they immersed themselves in the reo, embracing methods such as rākau-based learning. Under the guidance of esteemed mentors, including Awanui Black and Dolly Woodhouse, they honed their skills in whaikōrero and karanga, eventually stepping into the role of tutors themselves.

Their classes at Mangatawa Marae cover essential aspects of marae kawa, tikanga, pepeha, and the responsibilities of kaikōrero and kaikaranga. More than just instruction, these sessions create a safe and supportive environment where learners of all levels can grow. The Te Ataarangi teaching method ensures that both the tutor and student are engaged in a shared learning experience, making the process accessible and enjoyable.

One of the most rewarding aspects for Luke and Titihuia is witnessing their students develop the confidence to stand on their own marae and put their learning into practice. Seeing tauira step forward to deliver karanga and whaikōrero with pride is a testament to the impact of these classes.

With each session, Mangatawa Marae strengthens its role as a place of learning, where the echoes of past generations guide the voices of today and tomorrow. Whether new to Te Reo or looking to refine their skills, tauira are encouraged to join this growing kaupapa and embrace the journey of learning and revitalization.
