Our aspirations for this mahi
Our marae has an incredible history, and its inception is literally made from the calloused hands of our old people, whānau ingenuity and a series of tohu. This project hopes to build on that whakapapa by ensuring it remains fit for purpose and will last for generations more.

Ensuring the marae can carry out tikanga, kawa and whakamoemiti in alignment with its original purpose.

Wharepaku
Blessing
An intimate gathering came together on 21 July 2026 to commence construction works on the existing ablution block. Blessing was led by Vince Campbell.
Sabre will start construction at a date to be confirmed.
Stage 1 Wharepaku commences
The fences are up, old materials have been stripped away, and construction is well underway for the first stage of our project. So far, we have new entrances, reinforced timber framings and a spiffy red roof - kaumātua approved!
While Sabre (Main Contractor) and Clinton (PM/QS) have been hard at work, the marae is only taking small bookings due to our very humble but trust-y portaloos. Works are moving fast and we’re looking at an end of September finish!

It is actually a refurbishment, but we have called it a rebuild in all communications because it includes capital works such as foundation, structural and roofing reinforcements. This needs to be done as the current buildings are not up to today’s code nor of high health and safety quality. The marae facilities are also under extreme hosting pressure during tangihanga, civil defense emergencies and other kaupapa.
As much as possible, the main contractor will endeavour to keep the original character of our marae.

This kaupapa has been on the cards for years across succeeding boards and the topic of many meetings. That socialisation of this kaupapa began prior to 2023. However, the formal process for this iteration began at a Hui a Hapu on 16 Aug 2023 (state of buildings, review of reports, inclusion in strategy plan) and subsequent Hui a Hapu 23 Mar 2024 (quotes, grants), 7 July 2024 (building surveyor report), 17 Aug 2025 (phased approach, main contractor introduction) and 7 Mar 2026 (project manager introduction, staged delivery of phase one). This kaupapa is also a standing item at monthly Trust Hui.
The trustees don’t consider this process to be “done” and are continuing to figure out ways to continue engaging and communicating with whanau, especially in collaboration with the Project Manager and Marae Komiti.

We have intentionally built whānau engagement into funding.
Specifically, one of our objectives named in our TCC grant is, ‘Mō ngā uri whakaheke o Tamapahore: A home for current and future generations.’ This looks like intergenerational participation in activities related to the project (tamariki/rangatahi mai, pākeke mai, kaumātua mai). Our ask is for whānau to keep turning up whether it is hui, information evenings, blessings, or more.
There are also a lot of untapped knowledge and resources, so we encourage you to make yourselves known to our Project Manager so he can find a way for you to be involved in the construction or coordination process.
Kaupapa working towards similar vision

Kei Taku Hikurangi was designed as a love letter to our mokopuna and future generations, intentionally setting aside time for the hapū to come together in a facilitated wananga process to learn how to listen to each other again.
The idea is that the bonds of aroha and whakapapa will bind us together so that we are better prepared to re-imagine what the future holds, how to get there, and how to make the most of it.
