Preparing for the Symposium at the Marae

This past week, our whare rangatira was once again filled with kōrero, connection, and purpose as we held the first hui in preparation for our upcoming history-based symposium. Gathered around the table were our potential panelists – each one bringing with them a deep and unique understanding of our Marae’s beginnings, its kaupapa, and the many layers of history that shape who we are today.

The hui was an opportunity for whakawhanaungatanga – not only to reconnect as whānau and storytellers but also to align our collective vision for this weekend’s gathering. Our panelists generously shared kōrero from their lived experiences, interweaving personal memory with whakapapa and historical knowledge. Their insight confirmed just how rich and vital our stories are – and how important it is that we continue to uplift and share them.

There was wānanga around how best to hold space for both mātauranga and manaakitanga during the symposium, ensuring that our speakers feel supported, and our attendees leave with full hearts and full minds. We spoke openly about the importance of this kaupapa – to preserve our history, to celebrate our journey, and to ignite a deeper sense of belonging for our people.

As we look ahead to the symposium this weekend, we do so with immense gratitude for those who laid the foundations – and for those who now carry the kōrero forward. The energy in the room during our hui was clear: this will be more than just a symposium – it will be a reclamation, a celebration, and a taonga for generations to come.

Nau mai, haere mai – we invite all to join us as we honour our past, speak to our present, and envision our future, together.

We Invite everyone to join us this weekend for our Symposium.
